"Those of us who love the arts, as I do, have a commitment to secure the future of our arts organizations and artists. The building of endowments is an excellent way of doing this."
– Dr. Murray Frum, Chair

Lieutenant Governor's Awards for the Arts

The Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for the Arts were established by The Honourable Henry (Hal) Jackman during his term as Lieutenant Governor.  His aim was to encourage and reward the efforts of professional arts organizations in Ontario that have maintained a high level of artistic excellence while demonstrating exceptional private sector and community support.

In 1995, Mr. Jackman gave $1 million to the Ontario Arts Foundation to establish the Henry N. R. Jackman Fund.  Beginning in 1996, income from this endowment, combined with an additional annual contribution of $75,000 from the Henry N.R. Jackman Foundation, and $150,000 from the J.P. Bickell Foundation, increased the amount of the awards to $300,000.  The awards were re-named the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for the Arts (The Jackman-Bickell Awards).

Between 1995 and 2003, 84 organizations throughout the province received 162 awards totaling more than 2.5 million.  These winning organizations were not only leaders in artistic innovation, but excelled at building partnerships with the private sector and reaching out to the broader public.  We congratulate them on their vision, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for the Arts (The Jackman-Bickell Awards) have been discontinued.
