$650,000 Awarded to 21 Chalmers Arts Fellowship Recipients
The Ontario Arts Council is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2007 Chalmers Arts Fellowships.
“These 21 recipients of our Chalmers Arts Fellowships represent a remarkable range of artists both emerging and established. Thanks to this program, these poets, dancemakers, musicians, filmmakers and others will be able to explore or move on their next creative projects”, said John Brotman, Executive Director of the Ontario Arts Council.
This year’s recipients are: David Anderson, Mary Anne Barkhouse, Allison Cameron, Layne Coleman, Susan Crean, Jean Mohsen Fahmy, Ellen Flanders, Christy Garland, Christopher House, Luis Jacob, JonArno Lawson, Sarah Lazarovic, Popo Leboy, Laurie McGauley, Colleen Murphy, Quinsin Nachoff, David Oiye, Beatriz Pizano, Amin Rehman, Vivine Scarlett, Rina Singha.
The Chalmers Arts Fellowships provide support for the careers of artists and arts professionals when a concentration on artistic growth or renewal is most likely to have the greatest impact on their long-term artistic and career development.
The jurors for this year’s Chalmers Arts Fellowships were: Samir Baijal, Guelph; Michel Bénac, Ottawa; Ron Benner, London; Marie-Josée Chartier, Toronto; Eric Coates, Blyth; Mela Constantinidi, Ottawa; Melchior Mbonimpa, Sudbury; Bruno Moynié, Toronto; Kerri Sakamoto, Toronto; and Mitra Sen, Toronto.
Established in 1979, the Chalmers Family Fund at the Ontario Arts Council has grown to a $19.3 million (March 31, 2006) endowment fund supporting a variety of activities. The awards were re-launched as the Chalmers Arts Fellowships and Chalmers’ Professional Development Grants program in February 2002. The Chalmers family has a well-known history as one of Canada’s premier patrons of the arts. Long associated with the founding and support of a number of arts institutions, the family has also shown an extraordinary interest in honouring, through awards, prizes and grants, the individual artists who contribute to Canada’s culture.

Community Arts

Laurie McGauley ($15,875), community artist and artistic director of Myths and Mirrors (Sudbury), will travel to four communities in Canada to explore other community-based art practices with the goal of developing an outline for a book. |

Christopher House ($30,000), choreographer and artistic director of Toronto Dance Theatre (Toronto), will undertake travel and research for a new cycle of choreographic work. |

Vivine Scarlett ($33,750), dance curator, choreographer, arts educator and artistic producer of dance Immersion (Concord), will research and develop an arts education program using dance to explore Africa through the eyes of youth. |

Rina Singha ($35,000), choreographer, dancer and teacher (Toronto) and one of Canada’s dance pioneers will research and analyze over 50 years of personal archives to develop a collection of works (live and recorded) to pass on to the next generation. |

Layne Coleman ($30,000), writer, playwright, theatre director, actor and screen writer (Toronto) will dedicate one year to completing a full-length work of prose. |

JonArno Lawson ($30,000), writer (Toronto), will conduct research to study the rhythms, themes and dramatic movements of lap and finger rhyme games belonging to non-English languages and cultures. |

Ellen Flanders ($25,000), media artist (Toronto) will research and experiment with mixed media and performance based on the daily routines and the effects of living in the walled-in city of Ramallah. |

Christy Garland ($17,000), filmmaker (Toronto), will conduct research and collect preliminary footage in Guyana and undertake a broad exploration of birdsongs and the way we relate to them from a number of different perspectives: ornithological, cultural, ecological and the aesthetics of music theory. |

Mary Anne Barkhouse ($37,000), visual artist (Minden), will examine how both place and time European locales have affected Aboriginal culture in Canada. Barkhouse’s work addresses the imagery of power, authority and colonization through representation of large scale painted works and sculpture. |

Luis Jacob ($26,000), visual artist (Toronto), will explore and develop new large-scale works for upcoming exhibitions. His recent practice extends to orchestrated public sculptures, architectural space and performances to organized reading groups. |
