Ontario Arts Council Supports Artists in Residence (Health) Pilot Program
A New Collaboration Between the Arts and Health Care Providers in Ontario
The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) has launched an Artists in Residence (Health) pilot program. This new initiative supports artist residencies within health care settings, connecting wellness and creativity. OAC will contribute up to $93,350 towards artists’ costs for residencies in two designated health sites through 2010.
OAC’s partners include the new North Bay Regional Health Centre slated for opening January 30, 2011, as well as The Four Villages Community Health Centre in Toronto. Partnering arts organizations are the W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery in North Bay and Toronto’s Centre for Digital Storytelling. OAC’s funds are directed to the artistic and living costs of the artists in residence. The arts organizations involved are working closely with both OAC and health care partners. Health care partners for their part, will provide artist space. No frontline health care costs are being diverted to this pilot.

New publisher serves writers in northwestern Ontario
On December 12, 2009, more than 200 artists from Thunder Bay and surrounding areas gathered to launch Definitely Superior Art Gallery’s publishing house, Burning Books Press. OAC’s Northwestern Consultant, Marilyn McIntosh, attended the launch party. OAC’s Literature Officer, John Degen, sent his congratulations by way of a video greeting.
Background
In 2009, the Ontario Arts Council held a consultation meeting in Thunder Bay with writers, academics and other individuals interested in literature. The goal was to increase support for writers and literary audiences in northern Ontario. In the months that followed, OAC worked with Definitely Superior Art Gallery on a proposal to create a new publishing house, Burning Books Press.
Definitely Superior Art Gallery has extensive experience in producing zines, and the gallery plays a central role in the cultural life of Thunder Bay and the surrounding region.
Since the consultation and the start of the burning.books.press project, there has been more interest in literary production in northwestern Ontario. Burning Books Press is poised to become a third-party recommender for the Writers’ Reserve program for 2011.

Northern Ontario communities benefit from special arts education initiative
“Arts Education in Your Community” is an initiative spearheaded by Thunder Bay’s Community Arts and Heritage Education Project (CAHEP). Since 2009, CAHEP has been working with 13 northern communities to plan and develop arts infrastructure and programming.
CAHEP will mentor local artists and arts groups and connect them to schools, municipalities, businesses and residents in Kenora, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Atikokan, Fort Frances, Dryden, Marathon, Sault Ste. Marie, Manitoulin Island and North Bay. CAHEP is working jointly with Red Rock and Nipigon.
OAC funding will help communities with specific arts projects and will support a conference that brings together arts leaders from the communities to share programming experiences, lessons and resources.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is a co-funder of this initiative.
