Vineland, Ontario, songwriter David Gillis is the second recipient of the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award for his song A Mouse's Crumb. The annual $1,000 Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award supports and promotes the work of Ontario-resident emerging singer/songwriters in the genres of roots, traditional, folk and country music.
David Gillis was chosen by an Ontario Arts Council (OAC) selection panel from nominations put forward by the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals’ Songs from the Heart competition. The award will be presented to Mr.Gillis on October 16, 2004 at the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals’ Conference in Guelph.
Singer-songwriter, David Gillis was born to a musical family in Hamilton, Ontario. He has performed at various folk festivals throughout Ontario and in the U.S. He has twice been invited to perform on the main stage of the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society held annually in Nashville, Tennessee. In May 2001, he won first place at the Gamble Rogers Fingerstyle Guitar competition in St. Augustine, Florida. The award honouring the late singer-songwriter Colleen Peterson was established at the Ontario Arts Council in 2003 by her sister, Shirley Richardson and singer-songwriter Laura Bird. The Ontario Arts Council administers the The Colleen Peterson Songwriting Fund and the selection process. Contributions of additional money or property may be made to the fund at any time.
