Toronto, November 23, 2004 — The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) has launched five new programs to meet the evolving needs in several arts sectors. These programs were made possible by the provincial government’s increase to OAC’s budget allocation last spring. They also support OAC’s priorities as outlined in its three-year strategic plan.
New Programs
Word of Mouth supports the creation and production of work in the literary oral tradition that is intended for public performance or sound recording. This literary form, which is also known as spoken word, encompasses a variety of practices, including dub, performance, slam and sound poetry as well as traditional storytelling.
Grants for the creation of new work will be worth $5,000; production grants for the master-tape stage of sound recordings, up to $10,000.
Professional artists who have a history of public performance in dub, sound or performance poetry, storytelling or other spoken-word forms are eligible. Word of Mouth is offered in both English and French.
Deadline
January 17, 2005

OAC’ s new Theatre Creators’ Reserve program is a recommender program that assists theatre creators in the development of new work. Recommenders receive applications directly from theatre artists and forward grant recommendations to officers for authorization and payment by the OAC. The program is also open to creators who work in forms other than writing text (e.g. physical theatre), and accommodates collectives and groups of artists working on a single project.
Organizations receiving operating funding from the Ontario Arts Council’s Theatre Organizations program are eligible to apply to be recommenders. The selection of recommenders is based on a company’s commitment to the development of new work.
The minimum grant recommendation to artists is $1,000 and the maximum is $5,000. Theatre Creators’ Reserve is offered in English only.
Deadlines
Theatre artists can apply to recommenders between December 1, 2004 and February 28, 2005. The list of recommender theatres will be on the OAC Web site in early December 2004. In 2005-2006, theatre artists will be able to apply to recommenders between August 2005 and February 2006.

The Travel Assistance Program contributes to the travel costs of representatives from professional Ontario-based arts organizations (theatre companies, music ensembles, dance companies, curatorial staff, etc.) who wish to meet with hosting organizations (performing arts presenters, galleries, film festivals, etc.) to plan future programming and touring opportunities. The new Travel Assistance program works in concert with OAC’s Touring and Collaborations program to support the development of successful partnerships between the creators and presenters.
Grants are based on return excursion airfares or kilometrage whichever is less. Kilometrage is calculated at $.30 per kilometre. There is a $1,000 per person maximum. For travel to and from remote Ontario locations such as northern fly-in-only communities, the per person maximum is $2,000. Travel Assistance Program is offered in both English and French. Applications will be available on the OAC Web site as of December 1, 2004.
Deadline
Applications can be made at any time but must be received by OAC no less than four weeks prior to the planned travel. Applications are reviewed during the last week of each month and notification will be sent within 2 weeks of the review.
