“Arts Education rocks because it prepares young people for a lifetime of challenges and opportunities.”
Yoser Rodriguez - New Cuban Generation
Toronto, February 8, 2005 — On Tuesday February 15, 2005 at 7:30 p.m., the Ontario Arts Council will host a dynamic event called Arts Ed Rocks! – a celebration and showcase honouring young people who have participated in arts education activities – at the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People.
At a 6:30 p.m. pre-performance reception, youth speakers like Vinh Duong from Regent Park Focus, and Shira Jacobs from the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus, will be on hand to speak about the profound impact that arts education has had on their lives.
Arts Ed Rocks! will showcase a wide range of performers. Renowned Canadian jazz vocalist Tabby Johnson will open the show by ushering in a new generation of emerging Canadian performers and creative thinkers. Young artists including New Cuban Generation will burst onto the stage along with the powerful spoken word of Dwayne Morgan, the sounds of the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus, the contemporary dance of TILT, and the innovative theatre of the coloUred girls collective and the Centre for Indigenous Theatre.
In 2003, the Government of Ontario announced that the arts sector would receive an additional $15 million over two years through the Ontario Arts Council (OAC). This exciting news was accompanied by the launch of OAC’s three-year strategic plan that prioritized an ongoing investment in supporting arts education activity in and outside of the classroom.
