The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) has named Mark Haslam to the position of Media and Visual Arts Officer. Mark joins Carolyn Vesely, Visual and Media Arts Officer and Lisa Wöhrle, Associate Visual and Media Arts Officer, in managing this program sector at the OAC. The growth in the media arts sector has warranted Mark’s position expanding from a discipline-shared associate officer role to a dedicated officer position.
“Mark impressed us with his vision and strong administrative expertise in the media arts sector,” said John Brotman, Executive Director of the Ontario Arts Council. “He brings commitment to diverse and Aboriginal perpectives and a strong interest in arts education.”
Mark will be responsible for the media arts organizations in the Artist-Run-Centres program and the Grants to Media Artists programs. Carolyn Vesely manages the Public Art Galleries program and the Grants to Visual Artists programs. Carolyn and Lisa Wöhrle continue to be responsible for the visual arts organizations in the Artist-Run Centres program. Lisa is the main contact for the Craft Projects programs and Exhibition Assistance. She works with both Carolyn and Mark on the joint sector program Visual and Media Arts Projects.
Mark was the Founder and Director of the Planet in Focus Environmental Film and Video Festival from 1999 to 2004 during which the festival evolved into an important event on Ontario’s film festival calendar. Earlier in his career, Mark was a writer, director and producer at Vision TV for several programs, including a Gemini Award-winning series. He has been on the programming committee of Desh Pardesh, the multidisciplinary South Asian arts and culture festival and he has served on programming juries for the Hot Docs and Inside Out festivals. He has contributed both as an editor and as a writer to a variety of publications dealing with film, cultural studies and the environment. Mark has a Masters degree in both Fine Arts and Environmental Studies and he is a Fellow with LEAD (Leadership for Environmental and Development) International in London, England.
