Toronto, June 20, 2005 — TVO and the Ontario Arts Council are teaming up to feature the creative works of Ontario’s film and video artists this summer. The second instalment of Exposures: The Art of Film and Video will premiere on TVO’s popular arts documentary series, Masterworks, on Thursday June 30 and July 7 at 10 p.m.
Viewers will have the chance to watch a wide range of work from some of the province’s most talented artists who are challenging the conventions of film and video. The films, which vary in length — from 2 to 30 minutes — were not originally created for television, and each will be introduced by a short interview with the artist.
The line-up for Thursday, June 30 leads with Yin Yin Jade Love by Carolyn Wong. This 28-minute film tells of the unorthodox life of the filmmaker’s feisty grandmother, who arrived from China as a young child during the early 20th century to settle in Victoria. Up next is Janet Csonto’s My Bike is Gone! (4 mins.), featuring experimental animation that is both startling and quirky. White (4 mins.) by Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay, is a wistful homage to his grandfather and his Jewish roots. From Zachery Longboy, The Stone Show (9 mins.) is a follow-up to his earlier film, Confirmation of My Sins, about growing up aboriginal in a white household. In The Stone Show, Longboy, with the help of his mother and brothers, re-creates the memory of his aboriginal grandmother whom he only met once.
On Thursday, July 7, Ross Turnbull explores the emotion of joy through experimental film in Memory of Joy (15 mins.) In A Temporary Arrangement (10 mins.), Phillip Barker offers dreamlike images of family and friends floating on a river. Katherine Knight’s Marguerite (8 mins.) was inspired by Canada’s first uncloistered nun, Marguerite Bourgeoys, who settled and taught on the island of Montreal in the 17th century. x(trace), studies for a self-portrait (10 mins.), by Phil Rose, is inspired by British painter Francis Bacon’s self-portraits.
Exposures: The Art of Film and Video is a co-production of TVO and the Ontario Arts Council, which continue to work together to support, promote, and showcase the talent and work of Ontario’s emerging artists.
