Mobile Media On the Move Again

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) is funding Mobile Media 2, an eleven-community tour that showcases shorts by independent filmmakers and video artists.  Following the success of last year’s four-city tour, Mobile Media 2 was expanded so more audiences could see work that is not always available outside of the large urban centres.

The tour goes to: Hamilton (March 3), Timmins (March 4), Moosonee (March 5), Attawapiskat (March 6), Fort Albany (March 7), Sault Ste. Marie (March 9), Whitefish Lake (March 10), North Bay  (March 10 or 11, weather permitting), Sudbury (March 11), Moose Factory (March 12), Guelph (March 18). The screenings vary in each community.  They were programmed by a total of 11 curators and feature the work of 31 different Canadian media artists.

“ If you live in a small town or rural community in Canada, chances are most of the films or videos you see are made in the United States.  And any Canadian work you see is created in the large urban centres,” explains Mark Haslam, OAC’s Media and Visual Arts Officer.  “Mobile Media 2, showcases art films or mini documentaries by Canadian media artists that reflects their experiences, their cultural  communities, or their geographic environment.”

Filmmaker Annette Mangaard and media artist Cheryl Rondeau are coordinating  Mobile Media 2 on behalf of OAC.  Communities that responded to the call for presenters last November were added to the Mobile Media tour. In some cases, the screenings incorporate a block of work by local filmmakers.  Programmers have included films that reflect cultural and regional diversity and Aboriginal and francophone communities.

Mobile Media is a media arts tour brought to you by the Ontario Arts Council in association with the Weeneebeg Aboriginal Film & Video Festival; the Hamilton Artists Inc. and The Factory: Hamilton Media Arts Centre; the  Art Gallery Of Algoma and the Algoma International Film Association; Whitefish Lake First Nation; WKP Kennedy Gallery, the Near North Mobile Media Lab Partners and the North Bay Film Club; the Art Gallery of Sudbury /Galerie d’art de Sudbury and the Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario; Ed Video; Vtape and imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival.  All screenings are restricted to persons 18 years and older.
