Martha Durdin’s appointment to the position of Chair of the Ontario Arts Council (OAC), has been confirmed by the Standing Committee of Government Agencies. Ms. Durdin’s nomination to the position had been announced by the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Culture, at a program launch on February 3, 2006.
“We are delighted with this news,” said John Brotman, OAC Executive Director. “In her role as Vice-Chair, Martha has already brought significant insight and guidance to the OAC board meetings. She understands the needs of Ontario’s arts sector and is a very committed member of the board.”
Martha Durdin was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Ontario Arts Council in July 2004, and named Vice-Chair in June 2005. She has been a volunteer with a number of arts organizations, including past board positions with the Council for Business and the Arts in Canada, Opera Atelier and Factory Theatre. Other community activities include her former membership on the fundraising committee at Casey House and her current board position with the Homes First Foundation.
Ms. Durdin has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of marketing and communications. Presently, she is the Managing Director of Marketing, Communications and Client Strategy at BMO Nesbitt Burns. She was formerly Vice-President of Corporate Communications at BMO Financial Group and was Vice-President of Media Profile, a communications company, from 1983 to 1996.
A University of Western Ontario and London School of Economics alumna, she was appointed Policy Advisor and Coordinator of a Canadian delegation to the United Nations End of Women’s Decade Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. Ms. Durdin was also Director of Advance in the Office of the Prime Minister in the early 1980s.
