Toronto, December 8, 199 Donna Scott, O.C., CEO of the Ontario Arts Council (OAC), today congratulated the 20 winners of the 1999 Lieutenant Governor's Awards for the Arts.
"Nineteen of the 20 winners have received significant support from the Ontario Arts Council and would not have achieved what they have without the very important contribution from the taxpayers of Ontario," said Donna Scott. "Some of the best examples of public and private partnerships in the arts were rewarded yesterday."
The Lieutenant Governor's Awards for the Arts were established in 1995 at the Ontario Arts Council Foundation by the Honourable Henry N. R. Jackman, during his term as Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, to encourage and reward the efforts of Ontario arts organizations that have demonstrated exceptional private sector and community support.
Income from the original $1 million endowment from Mr. Jackman, combined with an additional $75,000 from the Henry N. R. Jackman Foundation and $150,000 from the J.P. Bickell Foundation brings the total amount for the 1999 awards to $300,000. Fifteen prizes of $10,000; four at $25,000 and one at $50,000 were awarded yesterday.
