Toronto, May 26, 1998 -- Scenic artist Mattea Goldstein is the 1998 winner of the Pauline McGibbon Award. The award was presented this morning at a news conference announcing the nominations for the 1998 Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
The Pauline McGibbon award is given annually to a member of Ontario’s theatre community in the early stages of his or her career, who has displayed a unique talent and a potential for excellence. The award is cyclical in nature, honouring a designer, a director and a production craftsperson in a three-year cycle. This year’s award was given in the production craftsperson category. Ms. Goldstein was selected by a jury of theatre professionals including Barbara E. Singer, head of wardrobe for the Canadian Stage Company, Designer Steve Lucas, and Ken Gass, Artistic Director of Factory Theatre.
Jury members were impressed by Ms. Goldstein’s unique combination of selflessness and professionalism and with her ability to interpret the designer’s vision and make it work.
In just four years as a scenic artist, Mattea Goldstein has worked on more than seventy theatre productions. From 1995-1997, she was Head Scenic Artist for the Blyth Festival.
Her credits in scenic painting extend from small and medium sized theatre to television. Ms. Goldstein studied theatre design in England, and first worked as a technical touring stage manager and lighting technician. Since returning to her native Ontario in 1993, she has been working as a scenic painter as well as studying at the Ontario College of Art and Design to continue to learn and develop her talent.
The Pauline McGibbon Award was established in 1981 in honour of the former Lieutenant-Governor’s support and patronage of the arts. Administered by the Ontario Arts
Council, the award consists of $7,000 from the Province of Ontario and a medal designed by Dora de Pedery Hunt, from the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation.
