Chalmers Arts Fellowships

Program for: Individuals

Objective: Chalmers Arts Fellowships support artists in Ontario to examine, investigate, explore and/or experiment with style, technique, process, method, content, or an issue or concern in their arts practice. The program allows artists to dedicate themselves to their arts practice, impacting their career beyond a single project.

Proposals that carry out research to undertake and/or complete the production of the art work(s) are not a priority.

All proposals must start on or after January 1, 2013 and end no later than December 31, 2014.

The program supports artists whose work reflects Ontario’s linguistic and cultural diversity, or Aboriginal and Franco-Ontarian identities artists at any stage of their career development, emerging to established artists, and in all customary and/or contemporary arts disciplines.

Eligibility: This program is open to professional Ontario-based artists. In addition, in order to apply to the Chalmers Arts Fellowships program you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident of Canada, or have an application pending for Permanent Resident status and, if requested, be able to provide documentation to verify this;
  • be a resident of Ontario for at least one year before the application is made;
  • continue to live in Ontario at least eight months a year, with the following exceptions:

Artists who live in Ontario may leave the province for up to one year and continue to be eligible for OAC support if the absences are temporary (e.g. for an educational or artistic opportunity) and they do not also apply for support from the jurisdiction of their temporary residence.

Artists living permanently in Quebec municipalities in the National Capital region who:

      • are applying to the OAC in French
      • have been recognized as Ontario artists
      • contribute actively to the artistic life of Ontario
      • have not sought assistance from the Quebec government for the same activity
  • work in one of the disciplines supported at OAC: arts education, community arts, crafts, dance, literature, media arts, multidisciplinary arts, music, theatre, visual arts

Ineligible Applicants

  • ensembles, collectives or groups
  • arts administrators 
  • persons who: 
    • have received two Chalmers Arts Fellowships
    • have applied to and/or have outstanding final reports at this deadline to:
      Chalmers Professional Development
      National/International Residency
      Ontario-Quebec Artist Residencies
  • members of a college or university faculty (Contractually Limited Appointment or Tenure Stream Appointment)
  • undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate students enrolled full- or part-time in an academy, school, college or university, regardless of the program of study
  • applicants whose requests are less than or greater than the program’s eligible grant amounts are ineligible
  • individuals who have any overdue or incomplete OAC post-project reports.

You may submit only one application to either the Chalmers Arts Fellowships or the Chalmers Professional Development Grants program not both on the programs’ June deadline.

How much can I apply for?

Artists who have less than 10 years of professional arts practice, have produced a reasonable body of work and have had significant public exposure may request a grant:

  • No less than $10,000 and cannot exceed $25,000.

Artists who have more than 10 years of professional arts practice, have produced an extensive body of work and have had significant public exposure may request a grant:

  • No less than $10,000 and cannot to exceed $50,000.

Deadline: June 1, 2012
Grant notification letters will be mailed out five months after the application deadline.
